ABOUT 40 people have already signed up to take the plunge in a sponsored abseil at the weekend.
The volunteers will launch themselves off the roof of Darlington Memorial Hospital on Sunday, starting at 10.30am.
Each participant making the 150ft descent will be raising money for the British Red Cross through sponsorship.
The charity is hoping to raise more than £1,000 through the event.
Among the participants will be funeral director Bryan Shepherd and eight of his staff.
Mr Shepherd, who has accepted the challenge despite having a fear of heights, is to complete the descent dressed in his full funeral director's outfit
