A ST John Ambulance hero who helped flood victims and found himself at the centre of a row with his bosses has warned his unit could fold after his resignation.
Russ Watson, of Redcar, was described as a "Godsend" by people in the east Cleveland village of Skinningrove, when he came to their aid after flash floods which devastated the village at the beginning of July.
But because he became involved in lifting sandbags he was reprimanded by St John Ambulance bosses, who told him he was not insured to do that job.
Mr Watson was so angry with the charity he has handed in his notice along with his wife Rebecca and a number of others from the branch.
He said that the unit's two clubs for children might have to close because there would not be enough qualified staff to legally keep the club going.
Mr and Mrs Watson have the support of their colleagues in St John Ambulance, the residents of Skinningrove, and the parents and children who belong to the unit.
On Tuesday night, Mr Watson met with his regional bosses to discuss his resignation, and a further meeting is arranged for Saturday to see what can be done next.
A spokesman at St John Ambulance said discussions were continuing
