RESIDENTS hoping to thwart plans to build up to 200 homes on village playing fields will get the chance to question planning bosses later this month.

People at Ushaw Moor, near Durham City, are campaigning against proposals for the development on the field, near High View, which they say was bequeathed to the village as recreation land.

Durham City Council, which is leading the Single Regeneration Budget plan, has received a 300-signature petition from villagers.

Advocates of the development say it would breathe new life into the village as well as having a knock-on economic effect in nearby Bearpark and New Brancepeth.

The council says the housing will help fund the wider regeneration scheme which will include environmental improvements.

Protestors will have the chance to view the detailed plans and to put questions to council economic development officers during a planning day to be held at Ushaw Moor Primary School on Wednesday
