MARSH Tackles' Terry Morgan beat the 100-strong field to lift Sunday's Prestigious River Ure Championships - sponsored by Ripon Angling Centre - weighing in a tremendous 39.7.0, writes JEFF HERBERT.

On the gravel shallows run-off opposite Sharow's Bell Bank, Marsh searched the farside on stickfloat and caster. His first of 16 chub came after 45 minutes and along with 5lbs of dace caught nice and steady till the whistle.

Graham Burnham of A1 Garage Doors filled second spot for the second week running on the ure. Staked below the willowgarth, stickfloat and single caster edged through a pacy shallow swim accounted for chub dace and grayling totalling 23.6.0.

Others to frame: I Walker Lower, Wharfe Angling 17.7.0 and P Werrett, Bramley Ward 14.10.0.

An influx of cold water prevented any big weights during the River Wear Championships.

The match length which included Shincliffe downstream to Chester Moor, looked just right carrying a touch of colour but very few dace showed.

Durham rods dominated led by Barry Lockey who was crowned champion thanks to a brace of barbel taking the scales to 12.1.0. Pegged in the woods at Frankland, stickfloat and caster tempted the identical specimens.

A pound adrift, Tommy Woods slipped into runners-up spot off the bottom length at Chester Moor. Unlike the winner Woods relied on four chub to stickfloat and maggot for 11.1.0 followed by Peter Scott 10.0.0.

The bream explosion on the lower reaches of the Tees continues and during the Yarm AA Alan Wells memorial trophy fish figured from many swims.

Darlington Angling Centre rod Eddie Bridon made it two Tees bream wins in succession bagging an impressive 18.5.0. Bridon started on the pole at Harkers farm catching a skimmers along with small chub and a perch on the worm before a switch to the groundbait feeder and worm brought seven bream.

Highlight of the match for Yarm's Martin Hobson proved a huge bream of nearly 7lbs. Tackling his swim on Fisheries Bend groundbait feeder and worm down the middle resulted in 17.2.0. from Mick Lovelass Darlington Angling Centre 16.2.0.

In the Darlington Brown Trout AA Scottish and Newcastle Trophy on the Tees the consistent Close brothers vied for victory.

Cyril came out on top recording 21.11.0. Sat on the chalk hole run out at Low Coniscliffe, an avon float and wasp grub located eight chub from farside cover boasted by grayling.

Meanwhile dace dominated Ken's return of 17.10.0 taken above the orchard at Croft to stickfloat maggot and caster tactics.

Saturday's Northallerton and District AC Open was hit by a river badly out of sorts. Heavy rainfall the day before pushed the Swale up two foot and chocolate brown.

Surprisingly most competitors caught and Claro's Martin Dodsworth fished a nice slack opposite Bramper Farm and feeder fished worm and meat taking a barbel of 6.2.0 supplemented by eels for 10.5.0 at the finish.

Best of the rest: Martin Highe Normark 9.11.0 and Cyril Close Shildon 9.0.0.

The Woodlands Section Show Down on Skylark Kestrel and Partridge Lakes at Carlton Miniott Thirsk. attracted 96 rods with the added bonus £100 for the section winner every five pegs.

Weights were a little below par as the water temperature dropped but Penrith's Mick Phillips fresh from his midweek success on the complex stayed ahead and grabbed the glory. Opting for the proven long pole and meat, Phillips was into carp throughout taking 15 specimens for 45.4.0 off Partridge seven.

Hot on his heels came Darren Bracken off Skylark 30. Bracken found both the long and short pole to his advantage taking a steady supply of lots of small fish including carp tench chub roach and a skimmer for 42.5.0.
