Of the eight matches scheduled for the local clubs at youth level last weekend only two were cancelled, both were at junior (U-16) level.

Whitley Tomahawks North B League (U-16) clash at Hillheads against Sheffield was cancelled due to lack of ice time while Billingham Bears North A league match at Altrincham Jets was postponed because the Teessiders' coach broke down on the motorway four miles from Wakefield.

In an U-10 North match at Newcastle Telewest Arena, Whitley Bay Mischiefs emerged 8-3 winners over Sunderland Apaches. Nathan Salem with a hat-trick plus a Luke Senior effort put Mischiefs 4-0 ahead at the interval. Grant Sharp got Apaches on the scoresheet in the first minutes after the restart.

Salem, Stephanie Towns, Bobby Mole and Stephen Bennett took Mischiefs into an 8-1 lead before Sharp and Joshua Lalande added two late strikes in the 39th minute.

Sunderland Cherokees met Sheffield Laser for the second time in eight days at Bantam (U-12) North A League level. After a 2-0 defeat at Sheffield, Cherokees crumbled to an 18-0 reversal at Telewest on Saturday.

Sunderland Commanches were twice in Pee-Wee (U-14) North A League action. On Saturday they went down 5-0 at Kingston Aeros. Telford Tiger Cubs were visitors to the Telewest on Sunday afternoon and were involved in a very keenly fought contest. Tiger Cubs went 2-0 ahead with goals at 7.11 and 10.23, the second when they were short-handed.

Commanches clawed their way back and Liam Telfer reduced the deficit with a well taken effort at 15.55. The equaliser came from Shaun Kippin in the 27th minute and Jamie Smithson fired Commanches ahead at 33.08. All three Sunderland goals came on the powerplay.

The lead lasted only 84 seconds before Telford drew level for a share of the spoils in a 3-3 draw.

Sunderland Arrows hosted Telford Rockets in Junior (U-16) North A League also on Sunday. Telford were ahead after only 12 seconds and then immediately called for a penalty on netminder Stuart Kitching who wore a shirt numbered 33 while his number on the game sheet was 29. Sunderland were handed a two minute bench penalty.

Arrows were level at 13.22 through a Stephen Laidler slapshot from the blue line. Telford regained the lead in the 25th minue and were 3-1 ahead at 31.37. Three minutes after Laidler reduced the deficit but could not find the game tying goal.

Billingham Wolves, last season's beaten finalists in the English U-19 championship final, began the defence of the North A league title. They faced Sunderland Tomahawks at the Telewest Arena. Tomahawks held a 1-0 lead at the end of the first period thanks to a James Hutchinson goal 16 seconds from the break. Sam Roberts, Tomahawks' netminder, made some fine saves in the first, but more in the middle session. Wolves equalised with the only goal of the period in the 30th minute through Stephen Wallace. Billingham struck twice in three minutes to take a 3-1 advantageby 46.00, Scott Ward and Tom Griffiths on target.

Goals continued to flow as Adam Carr replied for Sunderland at 48.02. Ward's second goal of the game at 50.04 on the powerplay took Wolves 4-2 ahead. Tomahawks responded when still short-handed when Hutchinson tucked away his second of the match 36 seconds later.

In North B League, Whitley Braves hosted Sheffield Scorpoions at Hillheads. Paul Sample gave Braves a 42 seconds lead which was equalised by 1.22.

Whitley held a 6-1 advantage before Sheffield struck again. After the second period Braves led 12-2 with 12 minutes left. Sheffield added two late goals. Whitley and Sheffield shared 108 penalty minutes and all of Sheffield's goal were on the powerplay.
