A COMBINATION of floodwater and high winds has swept away the swing bridge across the river Swale at Reeth.

The bridge collapsed downstream overnight on Tuesday as torrential rain and strong winds struck Swaledale.

Steel cables were strewn across a footpath and the concrete pile which secured the bridge to the bank was swept away.

The Yorkshire Dales National Park authority, which has been carrying out major river regeneration work in the area, posted notices on Wednesday morning to warn people not to try to cross the river.

Reeth resident Mrs Tracy Little said: "The water is really tugging at the bank and it's going like Grand Rapids in places."

The suspension bridge - always known locally as the swing bridge - was built in 1921 and was well used by walkers.

Six years ago repairs were carried out and black PVC was bound round exposed cable strands to strengthen and preserve the metal. The national park authority restored the wooden boarding at that time.

Reeth Parish Council expressed concern over the bridge's condition in April this year.

Ownership of the bridge is something of a mystery but it is believed it may have been built by public subscription.

Mr Philip Bastow, a Reeth businessman and former parish councillor, said: "The swing bridge is unique to Reeth. It is very distinctive and well known and well loved by residents and visitors.

"Everybody wants it back - and looking the same - but that is going to be expensive."
