RESIDENTS are worried about the route delivery lorries will take to a new supermarket in Durham City.

Tesco has received permission from the city council to build a store on the site of the old Hugh Mackay carpet factory at Rennys Lane, Dragonville.

The £15m development also includes a scheme to train jobless local people for many of the 460 positions that will be created.

But people in roads such as Bells' Ville are worried about the prospect of big delivery lorries trundling past their homes.

Paula Lewthwaite said: "We are unhappy with the route these lorries will take to get to the back of the store.

"We have had one public meeting about it and we are having another. A lot of people are getting angry.

"We really welcome Tesco, but we want them to take our views on board."

The company has pledged to pay for any traffic calming measures needed. The city council has also imposed conditions relating to roads in the area as part of the permission.

The residents are holding a public meeting tomorrow, at St Joseph's Presbytery, Mill Lane, at 7pm.
