VOLUNTEER store detectives have helped to cut thefts from a North-East charity shop.
Oxfam bosses made a plea for help after its branch in Front Street, Chester-le-Street, County Durham, was repeatedly targeted by crooks.
The charity, which raises funds for needy people in the UK and developing countries, said the thefts were "like stealing from a church".
Four volunteers have since come forward and, though none are dedicated store detectives, the increase in staff numbers has deterred the criminals.
Shop manager Alan Christian said thieves would swap price tags on clothes to reduce their cost and try on garments then leave without paying - although some cost just 99p.
Mr Christian said: "A lot of people came forward who couldn't believe that some people would stoop as low as to steal from us.
"The appeal brought forward a few volunteers which means we can keep an eye on things. Things seem to have quietened down and I think we have pricked the consciences of some, but we'll have to wait and see."
One applicant had not quite grasped the idea of a volunteer store detective.
Mr Christian said: "One lad came in and asked how much the job paid. When I told him 'nothing', he left."
