AN appeal to raise funds for a minibus to take people with learning disabilities on trips has received backing from a supermarket.
The appeal was launched in April to raise funds for an adapted minibus for people in supported living schemes in Bishop Auckland and Spennymoor.
Almost £3,400 had been raised when supermarket group Somerfield donated £4,000 to the appeal.
Lynda Jackson, manager of the supported living scheme which enables 35 people with learning disabilities to live independently, said: "The cost of hiring transport is very expensive and the minibus will allow more access to social activities.
"It's not just about physical care, it's about making sure they can go out socially and have a better quality of life. The money from Somerfield was a huge boost."
The appeal stands at £7,400 and the cost of a minibus could be £20,000. Anyone with fundraising ideas or who wants to make a donation can contact Lynda on (01388) 819772.
The next event is an autumn fair at St Paul's Church, Spennymoor, on October 7, from noon to 3pm.
