A NORTH-EAST airman is ensuring that vital emergency vehicles are kept in perfect working order in the Falkland Islands.

Corporal Paul Dean, from Darlington, is based at Mount Pleasant Airport, as part of the ongoing work of the British armed forces to provide security to the islands.

The 37-year-old, a former pupil of Haughton School, works on vehicles like fire trucks. In his spare time, he uses the wide range of facilities on offer to servicemen and women on the islands, including gym, indoor swimming pool, cinema and bowling alley.

He said: "I was out here about 11 years ago and I have been able to do more than I could last time.

"I wouldn't want to live here, but it's all right. I miss seeing my wife Helen the most.
