PLANNING permission has been given for the former Blackett Hutton site in Guisborough to be used for retail warehousing.
It allows for uses such as offices, industry and a car showroom.
There was one letter of objection, from Yorkshire Co-operatives, saying the proposal would affect the town centre by attracting prospective retailers who would otherwise have located businesses there. It asked the borough council to ensure the units sold only bulky goods and to order a minimum unit size.
Conditions imposed by the council stipulate that food, clothing and shoes, pharmaceuticals, toys, videos, tapes and fancy goods cannot be sold as main products.
The council felt the location, close to the centre, could encourage multipurpose trips to the town.
Furthermore, it said, Guisborough had no other retail warehouse sites and the development could reduce trips to other parts of the borough.
Additional housing of between 250-300 dwellings, proposed or under construction in the Guisborough area, was also taken into account.
