RIDING instructors have been saddling up for expert medical training.

Ten members of staff and NVQ trainees at the Unicorn Centre in Hemlington successfully completed a first aid course run by the Nutec Centre for Safety.

The course was specially adapted to cover first aid situations likely to occur in an equestrian environment, such as head and body injuries linked to falls.

Unicorn Centre manager Claire Jones said: "Horse-riding involves risk of injury for able-bodied people, never mind disabled, and it is an important requirement of looking after our 250 riders to have regular first aid training.

"But this is the first time we have been able to get training geared to our work environment, which really helped to focus our minds on potential problems."

Nutec will soon be back at the Unicorn Centre to train staff in manual handling and safe lifting techniques based on a new course. Details about this from Ken Lumley on 01642 566656.
