A YOUNGSTER'S slogan has won a competition for pointing the way to a safer route to school.

Sam Smallwood's "Go Slow" message, with a picture of a crossing patrol officer, now adorns 20mph speed limit signs around the Lakes Primary School, at Redcar, one of a series of safety measures in a pilot project, organised by Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council.

Eight-year-old Sam and headteacher, Pamela Delzenne marked the completion of the project, which has been helped by £50,000 of Government funding, by cutting a ribbon across the school's crossing.

Traffic calming measures, including speed humps and safety cushions, plus a residents' parking zone, have been installed. This is the second year of schemes, and funding is being sought through the borough's local transport plan, to extend the initiative throughout Redcar and Cleveland in coming years.

Year three pupils, together with teachers Ian Bruce and Jane Oliver, have worked on ideas, involving the views of local residents, in a partnership with the council.

Councillor Brian Hogg, a member of the council's environment and infrastructure advisory panel, said: "It's pleasing to see the efforts of those involved in the project, particularly the children, are being rewarded by the introduction of these measures."

Similar work has been completed at Normanby Primary School and work at Ravensworth Junior School, Normanby, and Bankfields Primary School, Eston, is due to start this term.
