THE priceless Lindisfarne Gospels are to be surrounded by tight security on their return to the North-East.
The Gospels, seen by 80,000 visitors last time they returned to the region, will be protected against thieves and vandals by secret measures.
Written by monks on Holy Island in 700 AD and dedicated to St Cuthbert, the artefacts go on display next week at the Laing Art Gallery, in Newcastle.
A gallery spokesman said: "Obviously, they are a national treasure and appropriate measures are being taken to protect them.
"We will be having extra security. This will meet the national level which is employed in galleries in London."
The exhibition begins on Saturday, October 7, and runs until January 7, 2001.
