A GROUP of teachers decided to skip school dinner after winning a free lunch in a local radio competition.

Staff at Cockerton Primary School spent their lunch hour enjoying free sandwiches after entering a competition on their local radio station Alpha 103.2.

The Darlington radio station has teamed up with local sandwich shop Hungry Jacks to offer listeners the chance to call in live on the Dave Lee breakfast show. The Snack Attack competition has seen hundreds of hopefuls calling the show to give their reason why they should be awarded a free lunch.

The latest winners were the ten members of staff at the Darlington primary school.

It was all thanks to one of the pupil's parents, Beverley Roddy, who had phoned the breakfast show all week, before finally being selected.

School secretary Chris Burniston then hurriedly ushered headteacher Rob Fenton out of a meeting to join the rest of the staff.

She said: "We didn't know Beverley had entered us into the competition so it was a real shock to find out we were all getting a free lunch.

"I called the headteacher and we got stuck into our sandwiches. We even managed to keep it a secret from the pupils for most of the day.
