THE future looks brighter for an east Durham community venture, thanks to an £81,000 cash boost.
The Hill Rigg House Project, Peterlee, provides facilities for individuals and organisations and is run by a management committee made up primarily of local residents.
The committee worked in partnership with Peterlee Town Council to secure the grant from the Coalfield Regeneration Trust, which will meet the cost of employing staff and running the project until March 31, 2002.
The venture, housed in the ground floor of the Lowhills Changing Rooms, was officially opened at the weekend and will stage its first community event - a fun day - on Saturday,.
Councillor Dennis Coates, leader of the town council, which owns the building, said his authority had put £80,000 towards its refurbishment.
He said he was delighted the trust had taken such a positive view of the project.
