EAST Durham firms have rallied round round to help a comprehensive school raise the last few thousands of pounds it needs to win technology status.
Almost 1,000 pupils from St Bede's Catholic School, Peterlee, took to the streets to complete a sponsored walk from Crimdon to Horden in a bid to raise the final £5,000 it needs.
Before it can qualify for technology status the school has to raise £56,000 and with £51,000 already in the bank Friday's effort was crucial.
To help the young fundraisers on their way, support and sponsorship came from Dick Graham, of 4x4 Ltd, Wingate, and Walkers Crisps, of Peterlee, who provided refreshments for those taking part.
Cochranes, of Shotton, Stagecoach, of Hartlepool, and Franks Coaches, of Murton, provided free transport to take the pupils to the starting point.
St John Ambulance members were on hand to treat any footsore pupils and Steady Eddy's disco was at the school to welcome the walkers back.
Jean Gray, head of technology, said: "The whole school will benefit from Technology Status, as the grant will allow us to buy new equipment, renovate parts of the school and form business links in the area. Already local businesses have been very generous.
