A TEESDALE resident has been given permission to build stables on his property, despite a push by some local councillors to put a stop to the plans.
During a meeting of Teesdale District Council's development control committee, members were divided on whether to approve plans for the stables, at Front Street, in Winston.
Ward councillor Ken Hodgson said the stables were too close to adjoining gardens and houses.
He said: "I wouldn't like stables near the bottom of my garden, and I don't think nearby residents would either. Moreover, the local parish council has objected ,and I agree that the stables should be further away from the properties."
But several members said it would be better for security if the stables were closer to the applicant's home.
Councillor Ken Coates said: "It costs thousands of pounds to insure good horses and I sympathise with the applicant, who obviously feel he wants his stables fairly close to his house."
Members approved the application, on condition that the stables be covered by render
