A SERIES of roadside checks has begun to catch motorists driving on bald tyres.
The two-week long campaign is a joint effort between Durham Police and the Tyre Industry Council.
The first check took place yesterday at the Garden House lay-by, in Durham City, near to County Hall.
Motorists caught with illegal or defective tyres could face a fine of up to £2,500 and three penalty points.
In a similar series of checks by police earlier this year, 11 per cent of cars stopped had one or more illegal tyres.
A Durham Police spokesman said it was vitally important drivers ensured their tyres were in good condition, especially with winter approaching.
He said bald tyres could increase the risk of an accident, particularly in wet weather.
The spokesman said: "This is a high-profile operation to remind motorists of the continuing need to pay close attention to their tyres.
"If your tyres are outside the law, you are probably outside insurance.
