Worthington CIU Pairs Championship

Michael Pratt and Jossie Aldworth of Old Shildon landed the Pairs Championship when they beat Gordon Parkin and Ton Parkin of Willington in the final, played at Leeholme. This was some consolation for Pratt, who after going through the season undefeated, lost the Singles Championship to Paul Atkinson of Willington in the decider.

The Pairs Championship was decided over the aggregate score over three frames. The first frame was a very tight affair with neither team able to get a decent run moving and ended with the Old Shildon pair moving into a 54-37 lead.

In the second frame the reds and colours were more separated and led to increased scoring. The Willington pair were one ahead after the final blue but the Old Shildon pair took pink and black to further their lead with a 73-61 win.

For the final frame Pratt and Aldworth had a 29 points start and got the early breaks to steadily increase their lead. Nothing went right for the Parkins and they eventually conceded when needing numerous snookers.

Norman Fowler Memorial

Aof Bishop Auckland became the star of the third round when he never put a foot wrong in beating Arthur Goldsborough of Willington, beating the previous high break twice in the process.

From his first visit to the table it was obvious that Aisbitt was cueing well and he opened out with sixteen. The next opportunity he had to score proved decisive when he knocked in a break of 66, beating the previous best of 50 by Steven Bennett of Darlington. The second frame followed a similar pattern only when Aisbitt got the opening he lifted the highest break mark to 70.

Jimmy Evans of Birtley was never on top of his form when he played Ian Dinsdale of Esh Winning but Dinsdale was sadly out of practice and touch. He never reached anything like his true form and lost both frames to Evans, who steadily edged ahead throughout.

John Armstrong of Shotton was trailing Charlie Blake of Middleton-in-Teesdale in the early stages of the first frame but came back strongly to take the final red with a black and then clear to the brown to win the points. Blake settled in the second frame and comfortably levelled the match. In the decider it was Blake who made the early running but Armstrong again came late and put in two breaks of 21 to pull through to victory.

In the quarter final tomorrow Paul Atkinson of Willington plays Evans of Birtley over five frames, then on Thursday, October 12, a delayed third round match between Dean Jones of Thornley and Sean Johnston of Coxhoe takes place - both matches starting at 7.30pm in Tow Law Club.

Jack Jobson Memorial Handicap Singles

Ithe second semi-final, played at Leeholme, teammates, Jimmy Evans and John Armstrong of Shotton Palms, met with the holder, Armstrong receiving three points start per frame. In the first frame Armstrong ran in a 23 break to open out a lead but Evans steadily reduced the arrears until he clinched the point on the final blue.

The second frame was nip and tuck all the way with both players needing the decisive black for the point. Eventually a good pot from Armstrong levelled the match. The tables were turned in the third frame, where both players again needed the black, but his time it was Evans who knocked it in.

The deciding frame proved to be a comfortable win for Evans, who forced Armstrong to concede when 47 behind when they got down to the colours. Evans will now meet Frank Nicholson of Old Shildon in the final, which will be held at Billy Row Club at 7.30pm on Thursday, October 12.

Crook League

Crook Olde Horse Shoe made a good odd point home win over Crook Mill House A. The Shoe had singles wins from James Ivil, Gary Bainbridge, Stephen Gill and Dave Leighton while Stephen Heyes and Mark Nicholls replied for the Mill, who made the score respectable when they took the doubles through Brian Harrison and Ian Bibby.

The Second Division was torn apart when the Crook Mill House B resigned only one week into the new season. This has created two blank weeks for all teams in each half of the season.

CIU Bass Finals

The round-robin final was held at Billy Row with only three players taking part as Fred Lintern of Willington had been admitted to hospital in Birkenhead while on holiday. All players and officials wish him a speedy recovery.

In the first game John Warriner of Crook Belle Vue never really reached his best against Charlie Donaghy of Tow Law and went down 150-82. In the second match Donaghy was in action again against Jim Alcock of Wingate, the holder of the title. Donaghy got away to a great start and built up a 47 point lead when he only required nineteen for victory. However Alcock came back strongly, and with two runs in the upper twenties, moved into a ten point lead, only requiring nine for victory. However Donaghy got back to the table and ran out the nineteen needed for victory.

In the decider for the runners-up spot Alcock steadily built up a good lead but then Warriner steadied himself and closed the gap to less than twenty points. However Alcock got back to the table and went through to take the runners-up spot by 150-132
