RUNNERS from Yorkshire scored three excellent thirds in top class company on Arc day at Longchamp, each taking home purses worth between £7,000 to £9,000.
Sugarfoot, ridden by Willie Ryan and sent over by Nigel Tinkler to contest the Prix du Rond-Point-Casino, a Group 2 event, was only a neck and three parts of a length behind British winner Kabool (Saeed Bin Suroor, Frankie Dettori) and the French colt Kingsalsa (Andre Fabre, Olivier Peslier). Sugarfoot is owned by Mrs D Wright and won the Michael Page International Silver Trophy Listed Stakes at Ascot last July.
The Prix de l'Abbaye, a Group 1 race, saw Pipalong, partnered by Kevin Darley, not far behind Irish raider Namid (John Oxx, John Murtagh) and the Newmarket runner Superstar Leo (William Haggas, Michael Hills). Tim Easterby trains this consistent filly for Tom Bennett, whose colours were carried to victory next day at Pontefract by Pipadash, now likely to go to the sales. Pipalong may run again soon.
The Prix du Cadran, another Group 1 event, was a British one-two-three as Royal Rebel, under Irish jockey Mick Kinane, was third for Mark Johnston, just more than a length behind San Sebastian (John Dunlop, D Boniga) and Persian Punch (David Elsworth, Richard Hughes).
Nearer home, Kinane won praise from part owner and breeder Willie Carson when winning for his partnership on Muja Farewell at Newmarket on Thursday last. The filly is trained at Maunby by David Barron, for whom the rider was gaining a first success.
Guy Reed, who is selling his well-known Spigot Lodge stables at Middleham where Chris Thornton has trained for him for many years, had his pink and gold colours carried to victory at headquarters the next day. They were worn by Darryll Holland on Lagoon, trained at Lambourn by Barry Hills.
Mark Johnston's Gaelic Storm won as expected at Redcar on Saturday, where Mick Easterby sent out Nowell House to success, Gyles Parkin up. Les Eyre put up Kevin Darley, who duly won on Mr Fortywinks, while Tim Easterby was in double form at Catterick on Tuesday, both Hilton Head and Bollin Nellie coming up trumps, the latter partnered by champion elect Darley.
On the jumps front, as usual Mary Reveley and Mick Easterby continue good form. Brian Ellison, newly moved back to Malton from his County Durham base, sent out a winner at Southwell on Tuesday when Vinny Keane partnered Arctictaldi.
York began yesterday and continues today and tomorrow. John Quinn may have a double today. Archie Babe (2.30), with Kevin Darley up, is the first possible, although it would be no surprise to see Don Enrico Incisa's Mcgillycuddy Reeks do well under regular partner Kim Tinkler.
In the 4.00 Quinn has Premium Princess with Pat Eddery. Here, David Nicholls sends out three, but preference for the main danger to Quinn's runner is David Chapman's Torrent with Lynsey Hanna booked - she gets on well with this enigmatic runner.
Tim Easterby has two in the 5.00, Double Action with Richard Quinn booked and Royal Romeo with Darley up. Darley could prevail.
Tomorrow (if running) at York, Mick Easterby and Gyles Parkin could complete a hat-trick with Nowell House (3.10). As an each way prospect, try The Butterwick Kid (Richard Fahey, Paul Hanagan).
New Middleham trainer Jedd O'Keefe may have the answer to the 3.40 in the shape of Route Sixty Six, after some eye-catching recent runs. At Ascot, Darley has been booked by Johnston for Attache in the Listed race opener (1.30), which gives confidence.
