A PROJECT to transform a 60s' marine laboratory back to its early 20th century appearance as a coastal lookout station reaches its climax today.
The official opening of the old coastguard station at Robin Hood's Bay is taking place this morning. TV personality and renowned birdwatcher Mr Bill Oddie will do the honours, supported by children from the local primary school.
Guests will then get a chance to assess the building's new role as a free exhibition, display and education centre interpreting the special qualities of the North Yorkshire coast and the elements which have shaped the area.
In partnership with the North York Moors national park, the theme of "Looking out, looking into and looking after" has been introduced at the old station.
The aim is to encourage visitors to explore the dramatic views from the building and see how they could help conservation agencies protect the coastline and keep it special.
The station will open to the public on October 21 and daily during half-term week between 10am and 5pm, followed by weekends only to the end of March (11am to 4pm), weekends only 10am to 5pm in April and May and then daily, 10am to 5pm from Whitsun to the end of September. Today's opening ceremony is at 11am.
