Juniors Hall Shield

With a steady 76, junior captain Gareth Atkinson returned the best gross score and when his handicap was taken into account was the clear winner of the shield and subsequently had his handicap reduced from nine to eight.

Results: 67 Graham Atkinson (19), 71 Johnnie Mitchell (22), Craig Johnston (21) and 80 Sam Johnson (23).

A trip to Woodham Golf Club for this year's seniors' outing was chosen by Roger Forshaw, seniors captain. The captain Gordon Bainbridge and competition secretary Dave Brown also joined the golfers.

The day started with a nine-hole Texas Scramble played in teams of three.

Top players: 31 net Roger Forshaw, Dave Brown and Gareth Jones; 35 net George Tocher, Alan Bruckbank and Alf Cooper; 35 net Gordon Bainbridge, Ron Blenkinsop and John Weedon.

In the afternoon a round was played as a Stableford competition with a countback being required to decide some leading places.

Captain's prize: 31 points Gareth Jones (18); Lewis and Cooper Prize - Alec Crow (16).

Others: 29 points Neil Exelby (20); 28 Brian Knapton (11) and Alf Cooper (16), also Peter Taylor (19).

Best score on the front nine: 17 points Bob Youes (19).

Best score on the back nine: 16 points Ron Blenkinsop (19).

Longest drive: Bill Bradley

Nearest the pin: Pat Heddon 509cms.

With a countback being required to identify all prize winners in this net competition. The best gross score of 84 was returned by David Bude.

Results: 74 net George Tocher (17), Bill Bradley (14), Noel Winstanley (14) and John Weedon (25).

Dales Alliance

Blackwell Grange was the venue for the second round of the competition with the home club returning an excellent 162 points but finding themselves sharing the top spot with Bedale and Crook.

Other scores: Catterick 160, Richmond 151, Thirk and Northallerton 143.

Thirsk, Northallerton and Catterick exchange positions in the table, but with Crook still in the lead with 1,273 followed by Blackwell Grange 1,271; Bedale 1,247, Catterick 1,216; Thirsk and Northallerton 1,207 and Richmond 1,192.

Once again top score winners were spread through the club with Bedale and Crook pairings of M Asquith and J Shaw and K Smith and P Goodall respectively amassing an excellent 45 points followed with 44 points by B Wilson and M Cave from Blackwell Grange and S Crooks, S Fairhurst and M Purvis also with 44 points.

Durham County Foursomes

Played at Chester-le-Street Golf Club, Bishop pair Sue Wright and Jamie Birkbeck lost in the fourth round, 18th hole, last putt to Barnard Castle.

Battle of Britain Bowl: 1st Andrew Aisbitt 77-14-63.

Ellis Cup: Steve Blakey (5) beat Andrew McGee (5) on the last hole (KO 126 entries).

Haigh Salver: Ian Cowie and Ken Cowie beat David Oughton and Brian Hedley (4 BBB knockout 76 pairs).

Mixed Foursomes: G and J Milne beat G Collinson and B Thomson.

Manners Trophy: One of the club's juniors, Phillip Graham, 70-66-71 (best three net over all competitions).

In a mixed friendly against Dinsdale Spa on Saturday, which was a Greensome Stableford with all matches to count, captain Ian Thomson led the Bishops team to a very close victory. Dinsdale will be looking for revenge in the return match next week.

Harrogate and District Union

Ladies Matchplay final

Played between two Harrogate golf club members, Ruth Skaife and Paula Simpson, the final produced an extremely competitive match. At lunch there was nothing in the match and the afternoon round seemed to be going the same way when the weather intervened and eventually the course began to show the effect of the rain. The 36th green was flooded so the competitors agreed to share the trophy for the which will be engraved with both names.
