HEALTH Secretary Alan Milburn will launch a project today to convert a church hall into a community centre.
The Darlington MP will visit the Willow Road Community Project during a visit to his constituency.
The area around the centre is home to many elderly people, and families with young children, who do not have an active community facility.
Although owned by the church, the site will be available to all in the community.
The Reverend Brian Holmes said: "We want to make Willow Road Community Centre a thriving and active place at the heart of the local community.
"I'm sure we will get there with our new business plan and the support of local people."
Mr Milburn, promising his support, said: "There is certainly a need for a community centre in the area and I can't think of anywhere better for it than Willow Road."
