The first round of the North-East Winter League got underway on the Wear, fished from Shincliffe through Durham downstream to Chester Moor writes JEFF HERBERT.
Yarm Piscatorials pulled out the fancied end peg draws and incredibly saw five team members in the top seven places to mark a sensational start to the new campaign.
Chris Hawkes of MNS was the only thorn in Piscatorials side, taking individual glory with an all chub bag. Drawn above the Hall at Shincliffe stickfloat with caster and maggot down the nearside crease, tempted nine totalling 16.2.0. Float ace Mick Broadley led the Yarm charge catching 10.7.0. Pegged on the Cathedral length, Mick initially chose the waggler but eventually came inside on the stickfloat and caster netting a chub of 2.0.0 quality roach to 1.8.0 and some prime dace.
Others: Mick Grainge, Yarm Piscatorials, 10.0.0; Peter Wadge, Dick Clegg Metro, 9.12.0; Brian O'Keefe, Yarm Piscatorials, 9.6.0.
Team placings: Yarm Pisc. 90 points; Darlington Angling Centre 88; Cleveland Angling Centre 83; Dunelm 77; Middlesbrough Newman Scott 66; Dick Clegg Metro 66; Darlington Brown Trout 61; Billingham Tackle Box 45; Yarm AA 44; Northallerton AC 34.
Nobody expected a big winning weight from the Ouse two foot up and still coloured during York and District AA John Smith's Hospital Cup. Selby's Dave Robson was delighted to prove the exception, hauling out a remarkable 32.7.0. Sat in the culvert in Beningbrough Park, groundbait feeder packed with caster, chopped worm and lobworm tail on the hook triggered the action, pulling out three barbel - best 9.7.0 adding two big bream down the edge. Union's Bill Collier adopted similar tactics opposite the Niddmouth and found four bream for 16.11.0 which was enough for second place.
Darlington's Anthony Alderson tamed a difficult Tees at Croft during the Thornaby AA Anglers Corner Cup recording 16.10.0. Anthony, on the stickfloat and maggot was getting dace and grayling off the groynes run-off when an 8.0.0 pike loomed up and snatched a dace. He swiftly landed the predator adding two good chub on feeder and bread across to swing the verdict. In contrast, a huge Tees bream of 8.12.0 supplemented an otherwise mixed small silver fish catch for runner-up Darlington's Bobby Trees who found the pole and single caster most effective returning 11.4.0 closely followed by Shildon's Cyril Close's 11.0.0.
The Ure although 18 inches up, produced plenty of sport during the Ripon Piscatorials Webster Trophy. Set on the Norton Conyers length, local rod Alistair Atkinson beat the 62 strong field with an excellent net of 33.4.0 from the last peg above Hutton Conyers Wood. Dace came early to stickfloat and maggot approach then a lull signalled a switch to feeder and caster attracting quality fish including three barbel and six chub.
Next, Ray Gilby also of Ripon relied on all chub to make it into the frame. Ledgering wasp grub above the Scar at Badgerbanks ensured a net of 25.6.0.
Others: Keith Lamb, Ripon, 20.6.0; Eric Wright, Bradford, 18.8.0.
Following the highly successful Section Show Down, Woodland Lakes hosted their second event.
Conditions were perfect, fish fed in numbers and to top it all section winners received £50 every five pegs.
Penrith's Mick Phillips, now under the Map Elton banner, has won four out of six matches. True to form, Mick did it again recording a carp haul of 69.15.0 to take the lead. Drawing Partridge four, Mick initially worked on the pole and paste at nine metres before a change to meat brought big samples best 9.0.0.
Resident tackle dealer, Alan Gregory was best of the rest off Kestrel 12. Fishing close in at one and five metres on the paste, Alan's net consisted of smaller carp to finish with nearly twice as many as the winner for 51.6.0.
Meanwhile during Saturday's sell out open at Woodlands, a tearaway carp caused a fair bit of drama. Damien Bracken (Trevs Wilmslow) on Skylark nine was into carp from the off. Catching on the pole and worm at 11 metres, Damien hooked a carp and on bringing it back to land the fish pulled-off the top three sections of his pole and promptly swam away, still attached.
After first checking with the match organiser, Darren jumped in and not only got his sections back but also bagged the fish, a specimen of 6lbs which proved crucial at the weigh in 48.11.0 - just beating nearest rival Map Elton's Keith Kotchie with a mixed bag of 46.6.0 off Partridge 26.
