STUDENTS in the North-East are being invited to apply for a share of £1m to address the social and educational issues in their communities which they think are important.
The money is on offer through Barclays New Futures, one of the country's largest single education sponsorship programmes.
It gives young people the chance to develop skills for life, work and citizenship through community initiatives.
Each year, the scheme awards cash, resources and professional support to about 100 schools across the UK.
Any secondary school, sixth-form college or special school can apply to Barclays New Futures for awards ranging from £500 to £20,000 each.
Students can choose their own project, which must involve at least one community partner such as a local business, charity or community group.
Previous winners in the region include Newcastle Hospital and Home Tuition Service, which won £7,000 for a project which aims to demystify hospital procedures and allay children's fears.
All eligible schools will receive a pack, or they can contact (0207) 792 4949 or visit the website on www.barclaysnewfutures.co.uk.
Barclays New Futures is run in collaboration with Community Service Volunteers, a national charity which provides advisory support, educational expertise and an evaluation programme for the project
