YOUNGSTERS have been given the chance to make music thanks to a project backed by a car firm.
About 75 children, aged nine to 13, took part in a three-week scheme at Usworth School, Washington, with Cosmos (City of Sunderland Millennium Orchestra Society).
The scheme involves bringing music and drama to children who would not otherwise get the chance of taking part.
The orchestra is sponsored by North-East Ford Dealers. Its musical director, Rupert Hanson, retired business manager of Petterson Ford, in Newcastle, said: "Thanks to the support Cosmos and I have received from North-East Ford Dealers a great job is being done bringing music into the lives of the local community.
"Many children never get the opportunity to find out if they are musical and that is a great shame as most do have artistic abilities. It is wonderful to see their faces when they do get to perform.''
A number of concerts have been held this year and more are planned. The money raised will go to local and national charities, such as Sunderland RNLI and Breakthrough for Breast Cancer.
