AN articulated lorry which lost control and overturned on the A1 brought rush-hour traffic to a halt yesterday morning.

Motorists faced lengthy delays on their way to work, after the 17-tonne truck toppled on to its side, north of Scotch Corner. Emergency services worked for about two hours to clear the carriageway.

The Leyland DAF vehicle was believed to have jack-knifed on the busy road, near Barton, at about 7.15am, blocking both lanes and forcing police to direct motorists into Darlington.

Diversions were set up to send drivers along the A66 and through Darlington, causing chaos in the town centre.

The driver of another car involved in the accident was taken to Darlington Memorial Hospital with back injuries, but was released later.

North Yorkshire Police were joined by colleagues from Durham in a bid to clear the road and traffic was eventually allowed along the hard shoulder. The carriageway was fully cleared at about 9.15am
