JJB reaps rewards for thinking big

THE old adage of "big is beautiful" has paid off for JJB Sports, which has announced a record set of interim results.

In the half year ended July 31, the sports retailing chain made a pre-tax profit of £22.2m, a 32 per cent rise on the £16.8m achieved in the same period last year.

The jump in profits was achieved on the back of a sharp rise in turnover, with JJB ringing up sales of £305m compared with £269m last time around.

JJB Sports founder and executive chairman, David Whelan, put much of the success down to the policy of closing down smaller less profitable stores in favour of opening superstores, both on the high street and at retail parks. At the end of July, JJB Sports had 422 stores, including 214 superstores.
