ANTI-SOCIAL behaviour orders could be used to stop people creating unofficial bonfires on Guy Fawkes Night.

The possibility of using orders to stop people causing trouble as the preparations for fireworks night get under way has been discussed by Stockton Borough Council, the fire brigade and Thornaby residents.

For several years, people in Thorntree Road and Redcar Road, Thornaby, have complained about the misuse of fireworks.

This year, the Five Lamps residents organisation is working with other agencies to try to combat the problem.

The council has said it will remove bonfire material found in unacceptable sites, or in dangerously large piles.

Residents will be asked not to put materials out for bonfires, but to call a free council hotline to get bulky rubbish removed.

There will also be talks by the police and fire brigade to school pupils and behaviour orders are being considered.

These restrict people from going to certain places, or behaving in a certain way.

Ward councillor Martyn Ingram said: "I think that some young people and their parents simply do not realise how much distress and misery can be caused to older members of the community by some of these problems. We need to put a stop to it."
