DARLINGTON's strikers are being urged to be greedy to help end their barren spell.

Manager Gary Bennett is desperate to improve his side's goal tally with just ten goals so far this season in the league.

Only York, Carlisle and Lincoln have a worse and that has prompted Bennett to step up his search for a goalscorer to boost his side.

But Bennett had no joy ahead of this afternoon's clash with Torquay at Feethams and now hopes his current crop of strikers will start to shine again.

A succession have tried this season and mostly failed, with only Lee Nogan having any joy with three goals.

Paul Beavers and Jesper Hjorth both hit the target in the reserves win over Hull City this week and Bennett believes it will help their confidence.

"Strikers thrive on goals," he said. "If they are not scoring then their confidence dips and that's what seems to be happening to ours.

"But they have to keep going.

"It was good to see Jesper and Paul score in the reserves and it will help their confidence.

"It shows they are on the right lines and that's what they have to continue. Sometimes our strikers are taking the wrong options with their shots and maybe taking that extra touch in front of goal when they should shoot.

"They have got to be a little bit more greedy and not be afraid of taking more shots. That's what they are there for.

"It's been disappointing so far, but hopefully things will get better."

With back-to-back home games to come - Kidderminster visit Feethams on Tuesday - Bennett wants his side to return to winning ways with a six-point haul.

And the double header gives them a perfect chance to put last weekend's 2-1 derby defeat at Hartlepool behind them.

Quakers have yet to be beaten in the league at home this season and Bennett is banking on two wins at their Feethams stronghold to revive his team's fortunes.

"If you have a good home record then you always have a chance to do well. So far we have just needed a bit of luck away from home.

"It was disappointing to lose at Hartlepool last week but we have to put it behind us and look forward.

"Everyone was down after the defeat but we talked about it and know where we went wrong.

"Mistakes cost us and it doesn't matter who you are playing against, you will get punished if you make mistakes."

Torquay are first at Feethams and the Devon side are struggling second from bottom in the table with five league defeats in their five games on their travels so far this season.

But they have highly-rated frontmen Tony Bedeau, who had a trial at Sunderland last month, and Eifion Williams in their ranks and Bennett believes they must not be taken lightly.

The visitors also enjoy an impressive recent record at Feethams with four wins in their last five trips North, only ended by a 1-1 draw last season.

"I am surprised they are down near the bottom," he said. "But they are still going to be hard.

"At this stage of the season some teams are still trying to find their feet and things can change so quickly so we are going to have to be on our guard.

"They have some good players with Williams up front."
