HOME secretary Jack Straw yesterday began a High Court action to jail a North-East man for allegedly distributing video footage of Britain's most notorious prisoner, Charles Bronson.

Steve Richards is accused of contempt of court orders banning him from selling, distributing or advertising footage from CCTV cameras at Birmingham and Hull prisons.

Richards, of Gateshead, denies the allegations.

Entitled Sincerely Yours, the video includes pictures of Bronson holding teacher Philip Danielson captive at Hull Prison for 44 hours.

Mark Cunningham, for the Home Office, said the video also shows Bronson being restrained by officers following an encounter with a prison doctor at a Birmingham jail.

"We do not know, and there is no explanation still as to how that material reached Sincerely Yours, Mr Cunningham told High Court Judge Mr Justice Pumfrey.

He said the Home Office was applying to have Richards and another Gateshead man, Stan Hardwick, jailed for being in flagrant contempt of earlier court orders.

The Home Office believes Hardwick is an alias used by Richards, the court heard.

The case continues.
