Hazelgrove occupies a steeply sloping site, which runs down from the main coast road to the seafront at Saltburn. Lord Zetland donated the land to the community about 100 years ago but, in recent times, it has become overgrown and neglected.
The area has now been adopted by the 104 members of the Friends of Hazelgrove, which is part of the 500 Club, comprising more than 500 local people dedicated to improving their community.
Plans for Hazelgrove include improved paths, particularly so disabled people can gain access, a sensory garden and a play area.
The group, which is working closely with Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council, whose countryside projects officer Keith Ferry is a committee member, is also carrying out survey work to see how the wildlife of the area can be protected and enhanced.
Jackie Taylor, membership secretary of the 500 Club, said: "Once people see something happening, it is more likely that they will join in. Hazelgrove has been neglected and the people in the town want to see the area managed so that everyone can enjoy it. It is a special area."
