TIPS to avoid becoming a victim of Internet crime will be handed out in part of the region from today.
The "safe surfing" advice comes in two leaflets launched to coincide with National Consumer Week.
Durham County Council officials have acted following complaints from people who shop on the Web.
There have been cases where thieves have obtained people's credit card numbers to go on shopping sprees.
The council has also tackled concerns that young children could be viewing graphic words and images.
Phillip Holman, head of consumer services, said the two leaflets contained practical advice on using the Internet.
He said: "Safer Shopping Online deals with the dos and donts of Internet shopping and gives top tips for buying online, while Safer Surfing For Kids tells you how to set up a home computer to protect children from unsuitable Internet material.
"It also gives simple steps parents can take to supervise their children's use of the Internet."
A travelling exhibition will enforce the message in the leaflets.
It will call at Castle Dene Shopping Centre, Peterlee, today; Newgate Shopping Centre, Bishop Auckland, tomorrow and Wednesday; and Millburngate Centre, Durham, on Thursday and Friday.
County councillor Don Ross said: "One in four people have already tried to shop over the Internet and we are keen to ensure that people do this as safely as possible.
"We're also keen to protect children from less desirable material on the Internet by providing a secure online environment in which they can browse and learn."
Anyone wanting copies of the leaflets should call 0191-383 3589.
