THE Northallerton branch of the Boyes department store chain has won an award to recognise its commitment to equal employment opportunities.
Its award was given by RecruitAble, the region's leading recruitment consultancy, for the employment of disabled people and people with long-term health problems.
The Northallerton store opened in High Street in 1977, and employs about 40 people.
It was presented with the award for a positive approach towards the recruitment of disabled people, including offering work trial placements and flexible job descriptions.
Project manager Donna Kenny said: "Worries that a disabled employee might need lots of time off sick, or may require more training than other candidates, can make some employers wary. This attitude can mean that employers overlook the right person for the job.
"RecruitAble can organise a work trial, so that employee and employer feel happy with the arrangement before a permanent position is offered.
"Boyes has reached beyond common misconceptions and we are delighted to recognise their positive attitude with this award.
