ORGANISERS of a Christmas shoebox appeal are looking for help to deal with thousands of presents expected to flood into their depot.

Operation Christmas Child Shoebox Appeal, run by the Samaritans Purse International, started with the handing over of dozens of presents from residents of Greenways Court, in Delves Lane, Consett.

Pensioners there have spent the whole year knitting woolly hats and toys for the appeal.

Local organiser Sandra Reynolds said a warehouse set up on Number One Industrial Estate, Consett, was expecting to get about 10,000 presents by the deadline of November 1.

This year's gifts will then be sent to children in Croatia.

Schoolchildren throughout County Durham have been getting ready for this year's appeal.

They have been asked to prepare shoeboxes for boys and girls aged two to four, five to nine and ten to 14. Boxes can be dropped at Asda, in Darlington, Reg Vardy garages, St Nicholas' Church, Durham City, Consett Library or Derwentside College.

Anyone who can help should ring Sandra on (01207) 506385.
