OPPOSITION is growing to council plans to bulldoze parkland and build a car park.

The open space, planted with mature trees and flowering bulbs, is next to the site of a former highways depot at Guisborough.

According to local people, it was designated by the former Guisborough Urban District Council as parkland in the 1960s.

The area has been earmarked by Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council for the relocation of a department based at Cargo Fleet, near Middlesbrough.

Objections have come from residents, Guisborough Civic Society and the Guisborough Against More Building on Open Land pressure group.

A council report states: "Members will need to balance concerns against the benefit of achieving the relocation of the offices and securing financial help from the Government."
