VOICES is a new magazine published by the Government offering advice and information to women. Produced in association with Good Housekeeping magazine, the glossy magazine offers suggestions on balancing work and home life, returning to work, health and fitness and personal finance. One of the success stories featured in Voices is Jan Henry from Stockton. Jan, 41, was a cleaner at her local learning centre for 17 years before the director convinced her to take a computer course with learndirect. Having worked her way through e-mail, word processing and internet courses, the mum-of-four was asked if she'd like to tutor. Now she teaches four evenings a week as well as day courses.
Says Jan: "A few months ago I was afraid to dust the computer at home, now I do more work on it than anyone else.
"I'd never attempted learning since I left school more than 20 years ago. Now, for the first time in my life, I feel I'm getting somewhere."
Voices is free and available at libraries, Citizens' Advice Bureaux, further education colleges and council offices.
