A SUPPORT group has been launched to offer help to carers of people with drug-related problems.

Wear Valley Carers Initiative has set up the group in Bishop Auckland so that people who care for someone with a drug problem can talk in confidence with like-minded people.

Loretta Watt, carer support worker with the initiative felt there was a need to establish a support scheme in Bishop Auckland because there was nothing serving the needs of such a group in the area.

"There is a stigma which surrounds drugs and we want to say let's not brush it under the carpet, let's have it out in the open," she said.

"We have got information about drugs, because one of the most important things is to give out accurate information. We have got telephone numbers of other agencies which can help, and we also offer one-to-one support."

Carers often fear that the people they care for are going to be locked up for their drug problems, or are concerned about their health.

They also face the strain caused by people stealing to feed their drug habits, and how society perceives the carers for sticking by them.

"We welcome the carers to come along so we can support them," said Ms Watt.

"We have only just launched the group, so people have no need to feel intimidated by thinking everyone will know everyone else.

"We meet once a month at the moment, but if the group is successful we will be looking at meeting more often."

The meetings are held on the first Monday of every month at Woodhouse Close Church, Proudfoot Drive, Bishop Auckland, from 1.30pm to 2.30pm.

The next meeting is on November 6. For more information contact Ms Watt on (01388) 451400.

Wear Valley Carers Initiative is managed by Teesdale Carers' Centre at Barnard Castle, which is funded by Durham Social Services
