DWINDLING numbers have forced a north County Durham branch of the Royal British Legion to appeal for members.
The Burnhope and Annfield Plain branch has seen numbers fall to about 40.
Branch treasurer Hugh Williams said: "Many members are now getting into their eighties so it depends on their health as to whether they can come or not.
"Most members are veterans of the Second World War, but the legion also caters for veterans of every conflict since, such as Cyprus and Korea.
"It seems a shame that the legion appears to be dying on its feet in Derwentside because it still does a lot of good work."
