NORTHUMBRIA Police are looking for four-legged recruits and are urging people to donate unwanted dogs.
The force is seeking male German shepherds aged one to two years that are fully vaccinated.
Potential recruits will undergo suitability tests and, if they are accepted, will be put on a 13-week intensive training course.
Handler PC Andy Buck's dog, Max, came to the force after having three owners in 14 months.
PC Buck said: "He was just too boisterous for most families, but since joining us he just lives to work and is doing really well.''
Inspector Terry Davison, of the dog section, said: "The dogs work hard, but seem to thrive on it. Max is a marvellous example.
"The last owner turned to us and we are really grateful, as he has turned into an excellent working dog.
"We are always on the look-out for quality dogs.
"I would ask anyone who feels that they have a pet that is too demanding for a family home, to think about the police as a way to give the dog a new lease of life.''
Anyone who is interested in donating a dog can call the force's kennels on (01661) 872555, extension 68632, for details
