PEOPLE in the Consett area are being urged to support a fundraising night in aid of one of the country's leading cancer charities.

The event, at Delves Lane Social Club, Delves Lane, near Consett, next Thursday, will feature live entertainment, including local singers and comedians, a raffle and bingo.

Organiser Jim Meegan, of Castleside, hopes the event will raise more than £1,000 for the Cancer Research Campaign.

In the past three years, he and his friends have raised more than £8,000 for the charity and he is hoping for a good turnout on the night.

The charity funds a third of all cancer research in Britain and is putting more than £1.5m into a drug development programme at Newcastle University.

The charity's community fundraiser, Rebecca Laverick, said: "We hope local folk will come and support Jim next Thursday.

"Not only will it be great fun, it will also be a chance to help raise vital cash for the work of world-class scientists, some of whom are right here in the North-East and are working towards finding new cures and better treatments for cancer.''

The event starts at 7.30pm and tickets cost £2. They are available by ringing Jim on (01207) 582570.
