With only two weeks gone into the new season, sponsored by Bass Breweries, Redcar WMC A opened up a three point gap at the top of the First Division after whitewashing Grinkle Park by six frames to nil. D Beckett opened the scoring by beating G Hutchinson 57-13 and 59-12. G Beckett took the next two frames from D Brown with scores of 73-16 and 67-38. R Beckham completed the rout taking the last two frames from M Hogan with scores of 56-13 and 67-25, during which Beckham compiled a 51 break.

In the Second Division Saltburn Cons. A remained in top spot after beating Redcar Cons. B by four frames to two. Guisborough TA 'A' continued their impressive run beating Redcar Unionists B by the same margin.

l The second semi-final of the Magnet Cup, which is an individual snooker handicap league, was played between Ian Walton (+15), and David Beckett (-20) at Carlin How WMC on Monday, October 9.

Dave Beckett won the first frame by 74 points to 63 with Ian Walton narrowly missing out to a black ball fight. Beckett then clicked into gear in the second frame compiling breaks of 20, 27 and 28 taking the frame tally to two nil in his favour. The third frame was again closely contested with Beckett compiling a 48 break which aided him in winning this game by 77 points to 64, this was to be the second frame by which Walton had lost on a black ball fight.

Beckett was now in full control and went on to win the fourth frame by 77 points to 38 therefore clinching the match by four frames to nil
