A 21-year-old man has been arrested in Spain in connection with the murder of millennium reveller Alan McQue.

Mr McQue, 32, was attacked and stabbed as he left a party on New Year's Day morning.

Detective Chief Inspector Alan Stewart, of Northumbria Police, confirmed that a man has been arrested in southern Spain.

He said legal proceedings were under way to bring him back to England.

Mr McQue, of Elswick, Newcastle, was stabbed in the doorway of The Chieftain pub, in Westmoreland Road in the city.

He died from his injuries in Newcastle General Hospital on January 5
