A SUPPORT group has been launched to offer help and advice to carers of people with drug related problems.

Wear Valley Carers Initiative (WVCI) has set up the group in Bishop Auckland so that relatives, friends and neighbours who know someone with drug problems can talk in confidence among like-minded people.

Loretta Watt, carer support worker with WVCI, felt there was a need to establish a group in Bishop Auckland as there was nothing like it in the area.

"There is a stigma which surrounds drugs and we want to say let's not brush it under the carpet, let's have it out in the open and help each other," she said.

"We have got information about drugs, because one of the most important things is to give out accurate information, we've got telephone numbers of other agencies who can help and we also offer one-to-one support so they don't feel isolated or on their own."

Carers often feel afraid that their loved ones are going to be locked up for their drug problems and are worried sick about their health. There is also the intolerable strain caused by people stealing to feed their drug habit and how society perceives the carers for sticking by them.

"We welcome the carers to come along so we can support them," said Loretta.

"We have only just launched the group so they have no need to feel intimidated by thinking everyone will know everyone else.

"We meet once a month at the moment but if the group is successful we will be looking at meeting more often."

The meetings are held on the first Monday of every month at Woodhouse Close Church, Proudfoot Drive, in Bishop Auckland, from 1.30-2.30pm.

The next meeting is on Monday November 6. For more information contact Loretta Watt, WVCI, on (01388) 451400.
