AN environmental preservation group has called for an area of open space to be given special protection from developers.

The Cassy's Field Environmental Preservation Group has asked Stockton Borough Council to help them look after the field in Thornaby.

Cassy's Field is in the centre of a housing estate and was scheduled for development under Cleveland County Council, but local residents complained about the plans.

Spokesman for the group, Bryan Moore, said: "Cassy's field stands out as a successful example of a pocket nature and recreation park, which needs to be urgently copied.

"The surround is composed of natural trees and shrubs and houses a mini wetland, which all provide a refuge for our diminishing urban wildlife, both flora and fauna.

"A flower meadow has been planted and the grass is kept trimmed for the children to play on. The field is not one of those boring urban spaces, which looks like a lawn, but has some character and purpose and children planted the trees."

The Preservation Group is now calling for special protection for Cassy's Field and for other urban areas to be improved by the council with the help of the public.

A spokeswoman for the borough council said they were not aware of any plans to develop Cassy's Field and the authority had been involved in working to improve the area.

She said: "Stockton Borough Council, together with Thornaby Town Council, has supported the Cassy's Field Environmental Preservation Group in the management and development of this site.

"Both councils have also funded some improvements, including tree planting and the siting of gates and barriers to prevent unauthorised access.
