AUTUMN is here and your garden may be entering that period when it doesn't need so much attention, but just imagine never having to cut your grass again.

No more feeling guilty because you haven't got around to it. No more hours trudging up and down the garden.

Until now the only option was to pay someone to do the job for you.

But there is another way.

The Robomow RL500 is an automatic grass cutter for reluctant gardeners who know there are better ways of enjoying the weekend.

Powered by rechargeable batteries, the makers claim Robomow is quiet, there are no smelly fumes and it will cut an area the size of a tennis court - approximately 250 square metres - before it needs a recharge.

v It's simple to operate. Place Robomow RL500 anywhere on the lawn and press the go button. It can work out for itself where it is and it will quietly get on with the job of cutting the entire lawn without any further assistance from its owner.

Robomow RL500 will operate for about two hours on one charge, leaving a perfectly mown lawn with no clippings to dispose of. Robomow RL500 is a mulching mower. It cuts the grass into tiny pieces and drives them back into the lawn where natural chemical breakdown will recycle the nutrients and moisture in the grass and actually feed the lawn.

Robomow RL500 will turn itself off when it finishes work, and can be driven back to its shed for recharging, using a special integral manual controller. This easy-to-use controller allows you to "drive" the Robomow RL500, allowing for manual mowing where preferred. Robomow RL500 takes 24 hours to recharge and, due to its unique guidance and perimeter recognition system, RoboScan, it can work unattended - even at night if required.

Your automatic grass cutter comes in a box with everything you need to self-install, including an explanatory video and an operator's manual.

You simply peg a thin wire onto the edge of your lawn and connect it to a small cup-sized switch. When turned on, the switch sends a small electrical signal around the garden and defines the area within which the Robomow operates.

Yes, it sounds too good to be true but the makers claim Robomow is no gimmick. In fact it represents many years of development.

The machine uses an on-board computer programmed to recognise the special wire running invisibly round the lawn edge. It can work out the shape and size of the lawn and ensure every inch is cut.

If you have neatly arranged flower beds or a pond, just fence them off with the plastic coated wire. Robomow cannot cross it. It even goes up small hills and edges the grass for a perfect finish.

The only downside is the cost: a not inconsiderable £500.
