AN east Durham gardening guru has helped pupils to turn their schoolyard into a colourful haven.
To thank voluntary conservationist Derek Brown, children at Horden's Cotsford Junior School made a presentation to him.
It was after receiving funds from Peterlee Education Action Zone that the school decided to transform its grounds.
Led by teacher Karen Deller, pupils in year six began the task of honing their gardening skills with the help of local naturalist Derek.
Under his guidance, the children have toiled for hours in a bid to bring beauty, colour and new wildlife to their grounds.
Willow saplings and other hardy plants have replaced flagstones, and bulbs and shrubs have been planted ready for next spring and summer.
Pupil Danielle Richie said: "Derek and his helpers have done a great job and the grounds are beginning to look beautiful. It was a brilliant idea.''
Classmate Neil Hartley said: "We are looking forward to seeing the plants and flowers bloom.''
To round off the scheme, all the grateful pupils and staff gathered together yesterday morning to present Derek with a book on flowers.
