AN environmental study has produced important data on how Teesside's waste could be put to better use.
A year-long survey into the waste produced on Teesside has been completed by the Middlesbrough Environment City organisation.
During the course of its research, which was funded by Biffaward, through the Landfill Tax Credit scheme, it found that more than 3,500,000 tonnes of waste are produced in Teesside every year, of which 300,000 tonnes is generated by domestic households.
Although some of this is already used to produce electricity at Billingham's energy from waste plant, MEC has worked out that more than 100,000 tonnes could be used to make compost.
Its findings are available in a report, Waste Audit: An investigation on the former County of Cleveland.
