A SPORTY writer is combining his two passions as the Great North Run's poet-in-residence.
Middlesbrough poet Andy Croft won the job after impressing the Arts Council of England, which is behind the scheme, with his dual talents for writing and running.
Having taken part in more than 30 half-marathons, and running 20 miles a week, as well as playing five-a-side football, he was considered an ideal candidate.
As part of his residency, Mr Croft is collecting writing and recollections from his fellow runners to put together a book.
He is also doing extensive work with children at primary schools along the route from Newcastle to South Shields.
In keeping with the heroic tradition of the race, Mr Croft has produced an epic poem, copies of which can be obtained from New Writing North by ringing 0191-232 9991.
